Protect what you love

You’ve worked hard your entire life, so as you begin to ponder retirement you should also consider what options are available to you, to help protect the things and people you love, and most importantly, yourself.

You can help protect yourself and your loved ones by:

Creating or updating your Will

Having a valid and up-to-date Will provides a clear outline of what you would like to happen to your assets and helps to ensure that everyone is able to understand what your wishes are and who you would like to leave your assets to.

You are also able to make requests, give to charity or create a Trust as part of your Will.

Creating an enduring power of attorney

When you have an enduring power of attorney in place, you control who is able to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to, including when you no longer have decision-making capacity.

Without an enduring power of attorney, your wishes as to who should act on your behalf may not be known – or respected. It may also lead to conflicts among family and friends, and delays in having important decisions made at a time when they are needed the most.

The Public Trustee can help you prepare your power of attorney for financial and personal matters. You can book an appointment by calling 1300 360 044.

Naming your Executor

One of your most important decisions to make when writing or updating your Will is to work out who should be your executor.

Being an executor often means having to make some tough decisions. At a time of grief, it becomes an even more difficult task for those closest to you. It is understandable that people feel lost and don’t know where to start – or you might feel like you need some help from a professional.

The Public Trustee impartially manages complex family issues, providing end-to-end estate administration. We can also assist with specific tasks when you are unsure or inexperienced, and can work with you to ensure the best interests of all.
